Every person comes into this world wearing only perfect, baby smooth skin. Sorry to say, puberty happens and bodily hormones make you sprout pimples and hair in all the wrong places. Most individuals will simply plod their way through this awful “awkward stage”, hoping to come out of it unscathed or – if you’re being realistic – perhaps with only a few scars as well as marks. Some do get out of this phase with great skin, but there are others who have to deal with acne for a lifetime. Oh, and the excess hair? It never disappe

It was 55 years ago today ... that John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time

Image
Friendships come, friendships go. But 55 years ago today, two young British men met, and it's not overstating things to say they changed the world. Paul McCartney and John Lennon met for the first time on July 6, 1957, at the St. Peter Church Fete in Woolton, Liverpool, England. Lennon was playing in his band, the Quarry Men, and a mutual friend and sometimes bandmate, Ivan Vaughan, brought McCartney along and introduced the two. A plaque on the exterior wall of the church, much-photographed by Beatles fans, tells the story of their meeting, and adds "As John recalled, 'that was the day, the day that I met Paul, that it started mo

John Lennon, Flawed Man in Life, Demigod in Death

And this man has now become a god?" (Cassius, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar , I, ii) To anyone who has till now doubted that Western civilization has been inexorably sliding into history's toilet, this must reassure you that you are very right and that we are on our final, creaky legs. Tim & Rosemary Leary, John Lennon & Yoko Ono in conversation in 1969 - released for 1st time today

Image
Michael Horowitz * , Timothy Leary's longtime archivist, has permitted the Timothy Leary Archives website to publish a transcription of a tape recorded conversation between Dr. Leary and his wife Rosemary, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono, made during John and Yoko's Bed-In for Peace in Montreal, May 1969. Tim had given it to Michael, in 1984, as a present for finishing Tim's bibliography. The conversation took place during John and Yoko’s week-long Bed-In, on May 29th, 1969. This is just a few months before John would leave the Beatles and move with Yoko to the U.S. where they were closely monitored by the FBI and threatened with deportation, and ten months before Tim would be put in prison for possessing a minuscule amount of marijuana, and Rosemary would be putting on benefits to raise money for his appeal. This transcript was intended to be added to a previously published piece, “Thank God for the Beatles” ( The Beatles Book , 1968), an essay about the Beatles as "ev

Bill Frisell Plays John Lennon

Image
Guitarist Bill Frisell is a true original, yet he is heavily influenced by a great variety of musicians. He says that having grown up with The Beatles, their music is in his blood. His album "All We Are Saying" is Frisell's interpretations of the music of John Lennon. Frisell explains how he draws from original sound sources, his personal experiences with the music, and other media such as photographs to capture the essence of the magic created by the music of John Lennon. Bill Frisell and his guitar visited the KUOW studios June 12, 2012. Frisell spoke with KUOW's Amanda Wilde.   Bill Frisell warming up in the KUOW performance studio.

Discovered: Conversation with John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Timothy Leary at Montreal Bed-In (1969)

Image
On May 26, 1969, John Lennon and Yoko One began their second “Bed-In,” a form of anti-Vietnam War protest that combined the media impact of a press conference with the comfort of hotel sheets. Their first Bed-In, which happened in various rooms of the Amsterdam Hilton in late March of that year, saw them grant interview after interview about peace all day long without moving from the bed in which they had ensconced themselves. They’d scheduled its follow up in New York City, but Lennon found he couldn’t enter the United States due to a previous conviction for marijuana possession. They relocated it to the Bahamas, where the heat soon prompted them to move again to the entirely cooler Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. There they recorded the song “Give Peace a Chance,” aided by such visitors as Tommy Smothers, Dick Gregory, Murray the K, and psychedelic drug advocate Timothy Leary. But Leary didn’t just come to provide a backing vocal. With his wife Rosemary, he recorded

John Lennon Vs. Neil Young...

Image
ALTERNATE TITLE: "Can't We All Just Get Along?" I've been mad at John Lennon lately, for something he said back in 1980 about Neil Young. Yes, I know he's not around to defend himself these days. This puts me in a really difficult position, because as much as I like(d) John Lennon, I like Neil Young More, at least as far as their solo careers are concerned. It all started when I read Lennon's 1980 Playboy interview for the first time. I'd long heard that was one of Lennon's landmark interviews, where he calls 'em like he see's (or saw's) them. He enumerated a lot of intriguing descriptions of the Beatles' music, revealing who wrote what and other details about the Beatles legacy-creating music. At one point, Lennon was asked something about Burning Out vs. Fading Away (A Neil Young-ism). Young, sings "it's better to burn out than to fade away", and Lennon didn't buy into that at all. Lennon went as far as to say

John Lennon and Yoko Ono Smile Film Resurrected as iPhone App

Image
Yoko Ono wants to document all the smiling faces in the world, and earlier this month she released an iPhone app to do just that. So far she's collected 2,700 jovial expressions, but it's unclear how the app is different from all the smiling pictures which currently exist on Facebook and Twitter, except that Miss Ono is now indirectly involved. Originally based off a 1967 film project idea, the app #smilesfilm is simply that: of smiling faces. “My ultimate goal in film-making is to make a film which includes a smiling face snap of every single human being in the world,” Ono said on Twitter. #smilesfilm users upload photos of themselves through Twitter or Instagram, and can interact with other geotagged app users by checking out other smiling faces in the “dream” section. According to the description, the app also comes with inspirational quotes and sounds from Ono herself: Our smiles change moods and opinions as they radiate positive energy out in

Humans Right Day - Jurisprudence is the answer

Image
Humans Right Day - Jurisprudence is the answer Today is Humans right day and I keep wondering for how long patience will keep on accepting the unacceptable. It seems to me that the fight for humans right should be something much more active and not only the mere remembrance of the Universal Declaration of Humans Rights and some petitions. The UN headquarters in New York City, US, should try promoting jurisprudence and make some of the rights to be more known like "The Right to Refuse to Kill". The agenda should approach not only a number of countries that are, well, far away from the western civilization. Anyway... This is a photography of Gustav Klimt's Jurisprudence presented in 1903 for the murals of the University of Vienna ceiling but it was not accepted as well as the two others Philosophy, received a golden medal in Paris but was attacked in Klimt's homeland, and Medicine. Jurisprudence was the third presented not accep

John Lennon and Peter Cook on "Not only ... but also"

John Lennon's second appearance on Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's comedy show "Not only ... but also" was an acting role in a sketch in which Lennon played Dan, the doorman of a trendy nightclub ("The Ad-Lav") situated in an underground men's lavatory. John was filmed with Cook (cast as an American TV presenter) outside the entrance of the Gentlemen's public convenience on Broadwick Street, close to the junction with Berwick Street in the Soho area of London, on a quiet Sunday morning (November 27th, 1966). Transmitted by: BBC2 B&W 26/Dec/1966 (9pm-9:50pm) You can find more episodes at Youtube or buy the DVD BBC has released "What is left of 'Not Only... but also'". BBC wants to make more money with this amazing comedy show that has a great cast, made history, change comedy and should be part of British cultural heritage.
