'British Steel' - Judas Priest

Image
The guitar riff from "Breaking the Law" is one of the most recognizable from early 1980s heavy metal. Though British Steel sounds dated these days, it's also a classic slice of metal, one of the best from a band that defined the genre in the late '70s and early '80s. Everything that ultimately became characteristic of heavy metal is here, from the lightning-fast riffs on "Rapid Fire," the anthemic "Metal Gods," and "United" to the obligatory party song "Living After Midnight" to the equally obligatory youth-rebellion song, "You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise." British Steel is unquestionably Priest at their peak. The 2001 remastered reissue includes two b

Bellini - St. Francis

Image
Bellini's St. Francis. Giovanni Bellini (1430 – 1516) was an Italian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian painters. His father was Jacopo Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini, and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna. He is considered to have revolutionized Venetian painting, moving it towards a more sensuous and colouristic style. Through the use of clear, slow-drying oil paints, Giovanni created deep, rich tints and detailed shadings. His sumptuous coloring and fluent, atmospheric landscapes had a great effect on the Venetian painting school, especially on his pupils Giorgione and Titian. Mr. Thomas Holloway, one of Tittenhurst Park's former residence is said to have acquired lots of art, especially one particular beautiful painting by Bellini of 'St. Francis'. The Bellini and its companions adorned the billiard room at Tittenhurst until the death Holloway, who bequeathed them to hi

Yoko Ono: 'Ceiling Painting' 1966

Image
by Yoko Ono Climb up a ladder. Look at the painting on the ceiling with a magnifying glass, and find the word ‘YES’ The interactive object known as Ceiling Painting was an important work shown at Ono's historic 1966 Indica Gallery show in London. The viewer is invited to climb a white ladder, where, at the top, a magnifying glass, attached by a chain, hangs from a frame on the ceiling. The viewer uses the reading glass to discover a block letter "instruction" beneath the framed sheet of glass-it says "YES." It was through this work that Ono met her future husband and longtime collaborator, John Lennon. Q: How did you meet Yoko? John Lennon: There was a sort of underground clique in London; John Dunbar, who was married to Marianne Faithfull, had an art gallery in London called Indica, and I'd been going around to galleries a bit on me off days in between records, also to a few e

Yoko Ono: This Is Not Here

Image
A document of Yoko's last art exhibition with John Lennon in a museum of New York, 1972. Not only the art objects they displayed, the film describes, but also how they, Yoko and John , themselves became art. At the last part, a "Pioano Piece" by Yoko in which people including John and Yoko are just hitting the surface of a closed piano is overwhelming. Narrated by an interview with Yoko on the exhibition.

Yoko Ono: Play It By Trust / White Chess Set

Image
by Yoko Ono Indica Gallery 1966 PLAY IT BY TRUST aka WHITE CHESS SET (1966) Play it for as long as you can remember who is your opponent and who is your own self. Yoko Ono Play It By Trust presents an all-white chessboard with all-white pieces, and alludes to the ideal of chess championed by Marcel Duchamp as "the landscape of the soul." Ono's game demands the ultimate abstraction by leaving all but the first few moves to be played entirely in the mind. With minimal and conceptual means so typical of her art, she reduces the game to its fundamental structure-an opposition defined by black versus white-to provoke a sage contemplation: How to proceed when the opponent is indistinguishable from oneself? YO: When I created Play It By Trust I wasn’t thinking about Duchamp at all. Many artists have worked with chess, but they usually worked with the decorative aspect of the chess pieces. I wanted to create a new chess game, making a fundamental rather than deco

Yoko Ono: Grapefruit 1971 Interview with Steve Turner

Image
An interview by Steve Turner 1971 We came together to talk about Grapefruit, Yoko's book of poems, and ended up talking about Jesus. Somewhere in between, we mentioned the Beatles. John and Yoko are currently facing the plight of 'super-stardom'. Within two weeks they had become the third set of artists I had met who were complaining of being sold as people rather then for their art or for their music. James Taylor was the first, complaining of being used only as a headline or a photograph to sell more newspapers, and Pete Townsend was equally determined that "he won't get fooled again" into being a "superstar". "Being misunderstood", John explained, "is being treated as if I'd won the pools and married an Hawaiian dancer. In any other country we're treated with respect as artists, which we are. If I hadn't bought a house in Ascot I'd l

Yoko Ono: Cannes Film Festival: May 1971

Image
Yoko Ono Cannes Film Festival, May 1971 Many people believe that in this age, art is dead. They despise the artists who show in galleries and are caught up in the traditional art world. Artists themselves are beginning to lose their confidence. They don’t know whether they are doing something that still has value in this day and age where the social problems are so vital and critical. I wondered myself about this. Why am I still an artist? And why am I not joining the violent revolutionaries? Then I realised that destruction is not my game. Violent revolutionaries are trying to destroy the establishment. That is good. But how? By Killing? Killing is such an artless thing. All you need is a coke bottle in your hand and you can kill. But people who kill that way most often become the next establishment after they’ve killed the old. Because they are using the same method that the old establishment

John Lennon: The Life by Philip Norman

Image
John's pursuit of The Answer had led to a new possible source. The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a comical little Indian with lank shoulder-length hair and a giggly falsetto voice, suddenly seemed to offer what he had been seeking. All four Beatles, kaftaned and beaded, sat at the yogi's feet to listen to his Buddhist wisdom. This was mysticism in an easily digested, tabloid form, instantly appealing to young earthly gods for whom real self-denial was unthinkable. His route to spiritual regeneration involved no special training, no memorising of complex prayers or incantations, and next to no personal inconvenience. It was bliss without effort. John Lennon and Yoko Ono in Amsterdam in 1969 where they held a honeymoon 'bed-in' for peace They travelled to his ashram in India in a huge gang of celebrities, including the folk singer Dono
