Image
More outtakes from the photo session for " The Penguin John Lennon " book have come to light. And as a Superman fan, I'm always delighted when my two main hobbies come together like this. More about Beatles/Superman connections in my previous blog post here. Thanks to Mark for alerting me to these new photos, all photos are by Alan Aldridge. The finished book cover featured an altered S-logo, but from the outtakes we can see that it was the real deal.

John and Yoko RKO Interview December 8, 1980

Image
On the afternoon of December 8, 1980, John and Yoko sat down to an interview with RKO radio at their home at the Dakota. This is a 10 minute excerpt of that interview. John discusses the album (Double Fantasy),  adjusting to being back in the studio after a 5 year absence, Sean, and describes in detail his and Yoko's first meeting at an art gallery in London. After this particular interview, John and Yoko would hop into a limousine to the studio to put the finishing touches on her song "Walking on Thin Ice". A few hours later; while walking from the limo to the apartment after returning from the studio, John was murdered outside of the Dakota. I am working on obtaining the complete interview and will post once in its entirety once I obtain the audio. The photograph above is the rumored to be the last photo of John Lennon. The man in the photo is one of the interviewers from RKO radio. After the photo was snapped, John and Yoko get into a li...

I decided to include the song How simply because it proved to be a perfect fit for the feeling I was trying to capture thru the photographs. Enjoy :)

John Lennon, Yoko Ono, New York City Is Your Friend

I finally was able to find the song by David Peel that says NYC is the friend of John and Yoko on the Internet. Here it is (It's the Ballad of NYC). Yes, there is an irony as to what happened on December 8, 1980. But let's remember Mark David Chapman came from Hawaii and originally from Texas and then Georgia. New Yorkers tended to give space to John and Yoko, and Yoko continues to stay in New York City three decades later. New York City was truly their friend. ADDENDUM: The song was on the album, "The Pope Smokes Dope" (1972). I have always been against drug abuse and found the antics of Peel uncomfortably trivial for the most part. Still, he and his band made me laugh beyond my discomfort back in the day...The song, though, is a gentle one, and again filled with a poignant irony as we hear it today.

John Lennon - Live in New York City (1972)

Image
Today's Live Performance, again from the Madison Square Garden in New York City, but from 1972 this time around, recorded and filmed on the 30th August 1972 to be precise. A by now legendary performance by John Lennon with Yoko Ono and the band Elephant's Memory. The concerts documented on Live in New York City were Lennon's only rehearsed and full-length live performances in his solo career, and his first – and last – formal, full-fledged live concerts since the Beatles retired from the road in 1966. Lennon never mounted a tour during his post-Beatles career. The concerts also marked the last time he performed live with Ono, as also with Elephant's Memory. The video has yet to see an official DVD and Blu-Ray release. » Pop Out The Youtube Video Player and watch it in XXL. Track listing All songs by John Lennon, except where noted. "New York City" – 3:38 "It's So Hard" – 3:18 "Woman is the Nigger...

Yoko Ono, Google And Others Commemorate John Lennon's 70th Birthday

October the 9th 2010 should have been the day that John Lennon celebrated his 70th birthday, but instead it's a day when the world remembered the musician and peace activist who was cruelly gunned down by a psychopath at the entrance to his New York apartment building after returning from a recording studio on the evening of 8 December 1980. John Lennon 's 70th Birthday was remembered around the world and even highlighted by the search engine giant Google who displayed a special 'Google' logo for the day in honour of his birthday, complete with an animated video to accompany the song "Imagine", one of Lennon's most enduring solo hits. A weekend of peace-themed events in Iceland kicked off in the capital Reykjavik with the premiere of a documentary about Yoko's quest to build the Imagine Peace Tower in memory of her husband. The circular white stone structure, on the city's Videy Island, has inscriptions of "Imagine Peace" in 24 languages...

All You Need Is Love - The Story of God and John Lennon

When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something's suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.' Barbara Bloom You probably know at least one Beatles song. There's Ticket to Ride, All You Need Is Love, Hey Jude, Help! - a treasure chest of songs that any band hoping for a record deal would give the world to own. A Beatles song is a two and a half minute masterclass on how to write the perfect pop record. A melody that will stay with you forever with lyrics to match. Sometimes funny, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes raw, always perfect. You would never know that behind all that Rock 'n Roll was a man in pieces. John Lennon 's childhood was deeply marked by tragedy, to the point where a distraught John was asked to choose to between living with either his mother or his father. He chose his mother, but in the end, he lost them both: his mother was killed by a drunk driver...

On December 8, 2011, the world remembers one of the greatest legends in rock and roll history. While it's been more than three decades since Mark David Chapman tragically took Lennon's life, the former Beatle lives on through his music, his image, and of course, his family. But that's not all. As his wife Yoko Ono explained to USA Today  , his "spirit still soars." Speaking of Yoko Ono, she's in Japan for a tribute concert. The Killing of John Lennon at Raindance Sun 30th Sept 7:15 (REVIEW)

In competition for the title of Best British UK Feauture, The Killing of John Lennon (2006) follows the life of killer, Mark Chapman from Hawaii to New York in the lead up to the killing of iconic Beatles legend, John Lennon. British Director, Andrew Piddington was first taken by Chapman when he heard of conspiracy theories relating the death of Lennon. Piddington explains the film took four years to make, and used location shooting throughout to give the most realistic portrayal of the events as possible; he felt compelled to find as much truth as possible, checking every source in the film at least four time before including it. Much of the film revolves around Chapman's testimonials and journals. The premise that Champan's motive to kill was promoted by his intense fixation with the book by, JD Salinger 'The Catcher int he Rye', which spoke of abloishing 'phoneys'. Chapman became certain that John Lennon was a 'phoney', singing of a...

John Lennon's Love Affair With New York

Image
John Lennon's Love Affair With New York   It was a slightly surreal experience being in London on Wednesday evening and watching the new documentary film LENNONNYC , an account of famed musician and activist John Lennon’s final ten years in his adopted city of New York. While the London Film Festival crowd was certainly enthusiastic about a film that brought them closer to one of their icons, the barbs from Lennon and his wife and artistic collaborator Yoko Ono were far from flattering about John’s native country. “I just couldn’t’ live there anymore”, Lennon says at one point of the film. “I couldn’t handle the hounding  by the media and the public, who always wanted more, more, more.” For Ono, the UK press had especially unmerciful, calling her ugly, ambitious and hanging on her the mantle that still smarts over 40 years later, as “that bitch who broke up the Beatles”.     However LENNONNYC is quite charitable towards Ms. Ono, sho...

Welcome to the Blog Site for the SHAKIN' IT show on 90.5FM--WCBE, Columbus!! Every week, I'll post my weekly playlists here and give you a place to download the entire show. The great thing about my current time slot is that it's the perfect place for a toe tappin' fun music show. I still love singer-songwriters and other slower musical forms that I played on "Radio Free Columbus" (1991-1995). But somehow, that doesn't make sense to me for this show. But the bad thing about the time slot is that many people can't listen regularly... whether it's movies, fine dining, or a night out listening to "live music" in the clubs... which, by the way... I strongly urge you to do! So this page provides the perfect solution! Either listen ON DEMAND or download the entire show onto mp3. Better yet, burn it to CD and turn your friends on too! If you'd like additional information on any of these art...

John Lennon marries Cynthia Powell

Image
1.22pm, Thursday 23 August 1962 (49 years ago) On 23 August 1962 John Lennon married Cynthia Powell at the Mount Pleasant register office in Liverpool. Brian Epstein was the best man, and George Harrison and Paul McCartney were also in attendance. Absent was John's aunt Mimi, who disapproved of the union, although Cynthia's half brother and his wife were there. As soon as the ceremony began, a pneumatic drill outside the building opposite drowned out all that was said; when the registrar asked for the groom to step forward, Harrison did, which only added to the farce. At Epstein's expense, they celebrated afterwards at Reece's restaurant in Clayton Square, eating a set menu of soup, chicken and trifle. Reece's was where John's parents Alf and Julia had celebrated their own wedding in 1938. On their wedding night John played with The Beatles at the Riverpark Ballroom in Chester. John and Cynthia met in 1957 while both were students at Liverpool Ar...

George Harrison, All Those Years Ago

Image
If you’ve read this site enough, you know that I like making declarations, so here is a strong one.  ”All Those Years Ago,” is required listening for Beatles fans and one of the best George Harrison songs ever.  It was written by George Harrison as a song for Ringo Starr to sing, but Ringo thought the vocal melody was too high for him.  So, it went to the scrap heap.  Then John Lennon was murdered on the streets of New York City, stunning the world.  I’m sure right away, Beatles fans the world over expected a musical tribute of some sort from Paul, George, and Ringo.  Rumors of a reunion must have been strong, despite the concept being horribly illogical with John’s passing.  On a certain level, the pressure must have been high on these guys to do something, which was of course, cruelly unfair.  If your best friend died, would anyone expect you to make a commercial pop song?  A so...

Cynthia Lennon

Cynthia Lillian Powell was born on 10 September 1939 in Blackpool, Lancashire. She was John Lennon 's first wife until their marriage broke down in 1968. John Lennon and Cynthia Powell She was born to Charles and Lillian Powell, and had two older sons, Anthony (Tony) and Charles. Cynthia was raised in the well-to-do area of Hoylake, Wirral, across the river Mersey from Liverpool. At the age of 12 she gained a place at the Junior Art School, near to the Liverpool College of Art. Before her father died of lung cancer in 1956, he told her she would have to support her mother, and couldn't go to the art college. Lillian Powell, meanwhile, eased the financial pressure without her husband by renting out their master bedroom to four apprentice electricians. Cynthia started at Liverpool College of Art in September 1957. A diligent student, she fell into a relationship with a boy called Barry whom she described as the "Romeo of Hoylake". Although they discussed marriage, the...

Why John Lennon Loved Yoko Ono

There is a saying that, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Many men and women do not take a chance on someone they're interested in due to fear. They have conditioned their mind to think, "Maybe he or she is out of my league." I believe the reason John Lennon selected Yoko was that she possessed some quality that captured his interest. Every one of us has something phenomenal to offer, so find it, tap into it, embrace it, and then show it off with confidence. You may have a soft, innocent quality, so show your new man that you are loving and sweet. You may have a sensual/sexy side, so show off your sex appeal. Maybe you're a strong, assertive woman; show your man you can handle situations that most people could not overcome. Sit down in a quiet room and close your eyes, imagining the great qualities you possess. Write them down, and then tell yourself every day the reasons why you deserve a good partner! The most important thing to remember is not to e...

John Lennon's Killer Denied Parole For Sixth Time

Mark David Chapman, the man who killed John Lennon , was denied parole for a sixth time on Sept. 7, 2010. A New York State Division of Parole board denied Chapman request "due to concern for the public safety and welfare." Chapman, 55, has been eligible for parole since 2000. He can apply for conditional release every two years. The next time he'll go before a parole board will be August of 2012. "I felt that by killing  John Lennon I would become somebody and instead of that I became a murderer and murderers are not somebodies," Chapman told the parole board. "I made a horrible decision to end another human being's life for reasons of selfishness, and that was my decision at that time."

Yoko: John Lennon Would Love Facebook and Lady Gaga

Image
Yoko:  John Lennon Would Love Facebook and Lady GagaYoko: John Lennon Would Love Facebook and Lady GagaYoko Ono, in an interview with the Daily Mail, said for the millionth time that no, she didn't break up the Beatles. She also said John Lennon would "love" Facebook, Twitter and Lady Gaga. Oh, Yoko. In a Q&A with the paper, Yoko reflects on her years with John, says she has no regrets about anything ever, and she offers up some educated guesses about how John would navigate life in today's world, at age 70. Here are just a few of her answers. On the nasty rumors that she broke up the Beatles:     The Beatles were a group made up of four very complex men, and my small hand could not have broken these men up. They broke up because they had reached an end, but in doing so they all also created new wonderful beginnings." Okay, fair enough. On John and the internet: ...

John Lennon’s Boring To-Do List: ‘HBO Guy Coming’

Image
John Lennon 's Boring To-Do List: 'HBO Guy Coming'Earlier this month, a rotten tooth yanked from John Lennon's head sold for $31,200 at auction. Now, an even more boring piece of Lennonalia is on the auction block: a to-do list written in black ink on a yellow legal pad. "HBO guy coming," Lennon notes. "Would it be a good idea to make sure BOTH CARS have full GAS TANKS?" Bidding starts at $3000. Now if only we could find the list where John Lennon outlines everything he has to do before getting his rotten tooth pulled, we could solve all global economic crises forever.
